Fathnama-i-Chittor of Akbar

Issued by Akbar after Chittor fell on 23 February 1568; preserved in Mughal letter collections

Persian text; translated and studied by I. A. Zilli (1971)

Akbar’s proclamation of victory after the siege of Chittor, sent out to announce the fall of Mewar’s fortress.

What it says

The Fathnama casts the siege as holy war against the infidels. It tells of the defenders under Jaimal and Patta, of the order to kill the ‘idolaters’ who still resisted, of their women and children taken captive, and of the sack of Rampura nearby.

What it proves

It is Akbar’s own word on Chittor, written eleven years into his reign, and stands beside Abul Fazl’s figure of some thirty thousand killed after the fort fell.
