The Dholavira signboard

Found
In a side room of the northern gateway of the citadel, Dholavira, Kutch, during R. S. Bisht’s excavations
Kept at
In place at Dholavira, covered for protection

Ten large signs of the Indus script, once fixed on a wooden board above the city’s main gate, found where the board had fallen.

What it says

Each sign is about 37 cm high, cut from white gypsum and inlaid in wood. The wood has rotted away; the signs lay in their order on the floor. The writing is still unread, so what it named, the city or its lord or its deity, is not known.

What it proves

It is the largest Indus inscription ever found and shows the script written for the public to see, at the gate of a city.
