Pag ghunghru bandh Mira nachi re,
main to mere Narayan ki apahi ho gai dasi re.
Log kahai Mira bhai bavari nyat kahai kulnasi re,
vish ka pyala Ranaji bhejya pivat Mira hansi re.
Mira ke prabhu Giridhar Nagar sahaj mile abinasi re.
Meaning
With bells tied on her feet, Meera danced. Of my own will I have become the servant of my Narayana.
People say Meera has gone mad; the clan says she has ruined the family. The Rana sent a cup of poison, and Meera laughed as she drank it.
Meera’s Lord is Giridhar Nagar; the Imperishable One met her as simply as that.
About this bhajan
The pada that put the picture of Meera into every Indian’s mind: a queen with ghungroos on her ankles, dancing in the temple, laughed at by the court. It refers to the katha, told in the bhakta-charitras, of the poison cup sent by the Rana of Mewar, which turned to nectar. Meera does not argue with her critics here; she lists what they say and goes on dancing. It is a favourite of kirtan groups because the refrain “re” invites everyone to join.
