Narsinh MehtaNarsinh Mehtac. 1414 – c. 1481

Meaning

Wake up, Yadava, Krishna the cowherd! Without you, who will go out with the cows? Three hundred and sixty cowherd boys have gathered; who will be the chief cowherd?

Who will eat the curd-cakes and the ghee sweets, who will drink the thickened milk? Hari, you saved the elephant and tamed the serpent Kaliya; who will bear the burden of the earth?

Grazing the herds on the Yamuna’s bank, who will play the sweet flute? Mehta Narsinh sings your virtues to please you: who will hold the arm of one who is drowning?

About this bhajan

A song to wake the Lord, in the tradition of the morning bhupali and prabhati. The cowherd boys are waiting at the door, the curd and ghee sweets are ready, the cows need taking out; and between the homely details Narsinh slips in Krishna’s great deeds, Gajendra saved and Kaliya tamed, and finally his own need: who else will catch the drowning by the arm? Gujarati households and Vaishnava havelis sing it before mangala darshan.
