Akhil Brahmandman Ek Tun Shri Hari

Narsinh MehtaNarsinh Mehtac. 1414 – c. 1481

જૂજવે રૂપે અનંત ભાસે;

વૃક્ષ થઈ ફૂલી રહ્યો આકાશે;

કનક કુંડલ વિષે ભેદ ન હોયે;

જેહને જે ગમે તેને તે પૂજે;

જોઉં પટંતરો એ જ પાસે;

Meaning

In the whole universe you alone are Shri Hari, appearing as the endless in many separate forms. You are the deity in the body, the tattva in light; in the void you dwell as sound, as the Veda.

You are the wind, the water, the earth, O upholder of the earth; you have become the tree and blossom in the sky. You made this varied creation to taste its many flavours; with that wish the jiva came forth from Shiva.

The Veda says so, and Shruti and Smriti bear witness: there is no difference between gold and a gold earring. Once shaped, the names and forms differ, but in the end gold is only gold.

The scriptures have caused confusion and did not say the plain thing: each worships what each likes, and holding it with mind, word and deed, takes that alone to be the truth.

You are the seed in the tree and the tree in the seed; when I look, the difference is right here before me. Narsinh says: this is the search of the mind. Love him with love and he will appear.

About this bhajan

Narsinh Mehta’s prabhatiyas are dawn songs in the swinging jhulna metre, sung in Gujarati homes while the household wakes. This is the most philosophical of them: Advaita told through a goldsmith’s image, earrings and bangles that are only gold, and the seed and tree that contain each other. The fourth stanza warns against quarrelling over scriptures and sects. The text follows the version given on Gujarati Wikisource; printed editions vary slightly in wording.
