01Ram’s Chandi

The temple’s katha says that Shri Ram worshipped the Devi before his battle with Ravana, and that she came to rest here on the Odisha shore; her name joins his with hers. Konark’s tradition holds her to be the guardian of the Arka Kshetra, the field of the Sun, so that the pilgrim to the Sun temple comes to her as well. Her murti is seated on a lion. The temple stands among casuarina groves where the river meets the sea, and the beach beside it is one of the quieter ones of the coast.

02On the marine drive

The temple lies on the coast road between Puri and Konark, and most pilgrims stop on the way between the two. Navratri and Durga Puja are its great days; on Sundays of Magha, when Konark keeps its Sun festival at Chandrabhaga, the road is busy in both directions. Visitors to the Sun temple who have the time usually walk down to the river mouth after darshan here.

Visiting

About 7 km from Konark on the road to Puri. The river mouth beside the temple is best at sunset.
