01Three parts on one axis
Walk in from the east and the temple unfolds in order. First the Surya Kund, a rectangular tank whose stepped sides hold more than a hundred small shrines to Ganesha, Vishnu, Shiva and the Matrikas. Then the Sabha Mandap, an open hall of carved pillars where dancers once performed. Last the Guda Mandap and the sanctum, set so that the rising sun at the equinoxes falls on the place where Surya’s image stood. The image is gone. The twelve Adityas, Surya in his twelve monthly forms, still stand on the outer walls in their tall boots.
02The upside-down date
A short inscription on a stone of the Guda Mandap wall reads Vikram Samvat 1083, that is 1026–27 CE. It is set upside down, which shows the stone was reused or reset during building or repair. That year matters. Mahmud of Ghazni crossed Gujarat to Somnath in the winter of 1025–26, and Bhima I had withdrawn before him. The Chaulukyas came back and built. The damage the temple carries today is put down in Gujarati accounts to the armies of Alauddin Khalji, who overran Gujarat in 1299; the Persian chronicles do not name Modhera itself.
03Modhera today
The Archaeological Survey of India protects the site and there is no daily puja in the sanctum. Every January, after Makar Sankranti, the state holds the Modhera Dance Festival with the Sabha Mandap as its backdrop. In 2022 Modhera village was fitted with rooftop solar panels and declared India’s first solar-powered village, a modern echo of the temple’s dedication. The plan and carving follow the Maru-Gurjara manner of the Chaulukya builders, the style later seen at Dilwara and Rani ki Vav.
