Kali's misery, and its one great virtue
Kakbhushundi finishes his chhands on Kali for Garuda. People are hungry, poor and diseased, quarrel without cause and live fifty or sixty years, yet carry pride as if they would outlast the kalpa. Kali has so ruined men that they respect neither sister nor daughter. Contentment and calm are gone, envy and harsh speech are everywhere, varnashrama conduct has vanished, and no one knows restraint, charity or compassion. Yet, he tells Garuda, this storehouse of faults has one great virtue: release without strain. What Krita, Treta and Dvapara won by worship, yajna and yoga, people in Kali reach through Hari's name alone.
