Holding her beloved Lord's feet in her heart, Uma goes into the forest and begins tapas. Though tender, she gives up every comfort. Love for those feet grows new each day; she forgets her body and her mind stays fixed on tapas. For a thousand years she lives on roots and fruit, then a hundred years on leafy greens. Some days she lives on water and air, some days she fasts completely. For three thousand years she eats only dry bel leaves fallen on the ground, then gives up even dry leaves, and so she is named Aparna. Seeing her body wasted by tapas, Brahma's deep voice sounds from the sky: your wish is fulfilled, daughter of the mountain king; leave this hardship, Tripurari will now be yours.
