What happens in this chapter

A night of vigil; the brothers' morning

Even asleep, Rama's face is lovely, like a golden lotus at dusk. In every house the women keep vigil through the night, teasing one another with auspicious songs. The mothers-in-law sleep with the lovely brides beside them, holding them close as serpents hide the jewels of their hoods in their breasts. At the holy hour of dawn the Lord wakes as the cocks begin to crow. Bards sing his praises and townsfolk come to the gate. The brothers bow to the Brahmanas, devas, guru, father and mothers and receive their blessings, and the mothers gaze lovingly at their faces. They go out with the king, bathe in the holy river, and after the morning rites the four brothers come to their father.
