What happens in this chapter

Every burden rides on the bow

Lakshmana commands: elephants of the quarters, tortoise, serpent and boar, hold the earth steady; Shri Rama means to break Shankara's bow, so be alert. As Shri Rama approaches the bow, men, women and devas call on their merit. Tulsidas gives an image: everyone's doubt and ignorance, the petty kings' arrogance, Bhrigupati's pride, the fear of devas and munis, Sita's worry, Janaka's regret and the queens' burning grief have all boarded the great ship of Shambhu's bow, hoping to cross the boundless ocean of Rama's might, with no helmsman. Shri Rama sees the people standing like painted pictures, then looks at Sita, and the abode of grace sees how distressed she is.
