What happens in this chapter

Ten thousand kings fail, and Janaka grieves

Then ten thousand kings try together, yet it will not move. Shambhu's bow does not stir, as a chaste woman's mind does not waver at a lustful man's words. The kings become a laughing stock, like a sannyasi without renunciation; their fame and valour are lost to the bow. Shorn of lustre, they return to their seats. Janaka grows distressed and speaks as if in anger: kings from every land came at my vow, devas and danavas in human form, and many seasoned heroes. A lovely princess, great victory and fame were here to be won, but it seems Brahma never made the one who could break this bow.
