The putrakameshti yajna and Agni's offering

One day King Dasharatha feels the grief of having no son. He goes at once to the house of his guru, falls at his feet and pours out his sorrow and his hopes. Vasishtha consoles him at length: be patient, you will have four sons, famous in the three worlds, who will take away the fear of devotees. Vasishtha calls the rishi Shringi, who performs the auspicious yajna for sons. As the muni offers oblations with bhakti, Agni appears holding a bowl of charu. Whatever Vasishtha had in mind, he says, your purpose is fulfilled; go and share this offering among your queens in fitting portions. Then Agni vanishes, and the king is lost in a joy his heart cannot hold.
