The forest unfit for a delicate princess

Man-eating rakshasas roam there, Shri Rama says, taking countless false forms. Mountain water brings sickness. Terrible serpents and wild birds live there, and bands of night-roamers who carry off men and women. Even the brave grow afraid when they remember the deep woods, and you, fawn-eyed one, are timid by nature. If you, who walk with a swan's grace, went to the forest, people would blame me. Can a swan raised on the nectar-like water of Manasarovara live in the salt sea? Think on this and stay home, moon-faced one, for the forest brings heavy sorrow. One who does not take to heart the counsel of a friend, guru or master repents bitterly and surely suffers harm.
