The mother's lament, Sita arrives

Kausalya prays that all the gods and forefathers guard him as the eyelids guard the eye. His dear ones are fish living in the water of the fourteen years; let him return while they still live. Go happily to the forest, she says, leaving the city, kin and villages orphaned. Today the fruit of everyone's merit has run out, and cruel Time has turned against them. Lamenting in many ways she clings to his feet, counting herself most unfortunate. Shri Rama raises his mother, holds her to his breast and consoles her with gentle words. At that moment Sita hears the news, rises in distress, comes and bows at her mother-in-law's feet, and sits with her head lowered.
