कोसलपति गति सुनि जनकौरा । भे सब लोग सोक-बस बौरा ॥
जेहिं देखे तेहि समय विदेहू । नाम सत्य अस लाग न केहू ॥
kosalapati gati suni janakaurā | bhe saba loga soka-basa baurā ||
jehiṃ dekhe tehi samaya videhū | nāma satya asa lāga na kehū ||

The envoy tells the story. When Janakpur heard what befell the lord of Kosala, everyone went mad with grief. Whoever saw Janaka then would not have thought his name Videha true. Hearing of the queen's evil scheme, the king could see nothing, like a serpent without its jewel. Bharata to rule and Rama to the forest: the lord of Mithila's heart sank. His ministers could not say whether to go or stay. Then the king took courage, thought it over, and sent four shrewd spies to Ayodhya: find out whether Bharata's feeling is true or false, and come back quickly without being noticed. The spies went, saw Bharata's conduct, and as Bharata set out for Chitrakoot, they set out for Tirhut.
