Hearing Bharata's pure words the devas rejoice, praise him, and rain flowers. The people of Ayodhya are caught in a dilemma, while the hermits and forest dwellers are glad at heart. Raghunatha, out of reserve, stays silent, and seeing the Lord so, the whole assembly is anxious. At that moment Janaka's messengers arrive. Hearing of them, the sage Vasishtha calls them near. They bow, look at Rama, and are pained to see his dress. The sage asks for news of King Videha's welfare. Abashed, they bow to the ground and the chief envoy speaks with joined hands. Master, your kind question has become our welfare. Otherwise, Lord, welfare went away with the lord of Kosala. Mithila and Ayodhya most of all, the whole world has become orphaned.
