The last rites of King Dasharatha

The king's body is bathed as the Veda prescribes and a splendid bier is made. Bharata clasps the feet of the mothers and keeps them from the pyre, for they still long to see Rama. Loads of sandalwood, aloe and fragrances arrive. On the bank of the Sarayu a pyre rises like a stairway to the city of the gods. The rites are done; Bharata bathes and offers water with sesame. Consulting Smriti, Veda and Purana, he performs the ten-day rites, doing everything a thousandfold as the sage directs. Made pure, he gives away cows, horses, elephants, a throne, ornaments, grain, land and houses, until the Brahmins have every wish fulfilled.
