A night of tears, then Vasishtha's counsel
Rama is dearer to you than life, Kaushalya says, and you are dearer to him than life. The moon may drip poison and frost give off fire, a fish may turn from water, delusion may outlive knowledge, but you could never turn against Rama. Whoever calls this your plan will find no happiness even in a dream. She holds him to her heart; milk flows from her breast and tears fill her eyes. They sit lamenting until the night is gone. Then Vamadeva and Vasishtha come and call the ministers and elders. The sage teaches Bharata the highest truths and tells him to be firm and do what the hour asks. Bharata rises and orders all to be made ready.
