Messengers ride for Bharata; ill omens
The king's body is laid in a vessel filled with oil. Vasishtha calls messengers: run quickly to Bharata, and tell no one anywhere about the king. Say only this to Bharata: the guru has sent for both brothers. At the muni's order the runners race off on horses that shame the wind. Meanwhile, ever since the calamity began in Avadh, Bharata has met evil omens. He sees fearful dreams at night and wakes imagining a thousand bitter things. By day he feeds brahmanas and gives gifts, performs abhisheka of Shiva in many ways, and prays to Mahesha in his heart for the welfare of his mother, father, kin and brothers. In the doha, as Bharata broods, the messengers arrive; hearing the guru's command, he sets out after invoking Ganesha.
