What happens in this chapter

Bharata enters a stricken city

Bharata drives the horses at the speed of wind, crossing rivers, hills and rough forests. He wishes he could fly; a blink passes like a year. As he nears and enters the city, ill omens crowd in: crows caw harshly from bad places, donkeys and jackals cry inauspiciously, and each sound pierces his heart. Lakes, woods and gardens look stripped of beauty. Birds, beasts, horses and elephants are wretched to see, wasted by the sickness of separation from Shri Rama. Men and women look utterly stricken, as if all had lost everything. In the doha the townsfolk meet him but say nothing; they greet him quietly and pass on. Fear and sorrow keep them from even asking after his welfare.
