Avadh mourns; Vasishtha consoles

Dasharatha won the fruit of both living and dying; his pure fame spread through countless worlds. Living, he gazed on Shri Rama's moonlike face; dying of separation from Shri Rama, he made his death beautiful. The grief-stricken queens weep, praising his beauty, virtue, strength and splendour, lamenting and falling to the ground again and again. Servants and maids wail, and in every house the townsfolk cry: today the sun of the solar line has set, the bound of dharma, the store of virtue. All of them curse Kaikeyi, who has left the world without eyes. So the night passes in lament. At dawn the great sages arrive, and Vasishtha, speaking as the time required and recounting many accounts of old, dispels everyone's grief by the light of his own wisdom.
