Manthara sees the festivity and burns

Manthara sees the city decorated and hears festive music. She asks what the celebration is, and hearing of Rama's tilak her heart burns. All night the ill-minded woman broods on how to ruin it, like a crooked Kirata woman eyeing a honeycomb. She goes weeping to Bharata's mother. Kaikeyi laughs and asks why she is glum. Manthara only sighs and sheds tears. The queen laughs again: you have a long tongue; I suppose Lakshmana has taught you a lesson. Still the wicked maid says nothing, hissing like a black she-serpent. Alarmed, the queen asks: are Rama, the king, Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna well? The hunchback's heart aches at this.
