Manthara's first sting and Kaikeyi's rebuke

Manthara answers bitterly: who would teach me, and on whose strength would I be bold? Who is well today but Rama, whom the king makes yuvaraja? Providence has turned kind to Kausalya, and her pride overflows. Go and see the splendour that upset me this morning. Your son is abroad, yet you have no care, thinking the king is in your power. You love sleep and a soft bed and do not see his deceitful cleverness. Knowing her mind is foul, the queen scolds: hold your tongue, home-breaker; say this again and I will have your tongue pulled out. Yet she smiles, remarking that the one-eyed, the lame and the hunchbacked are reckoned crooked, a woman more so, a maid most of all.
