Meaning

Madhava, Keshava, who churned the ocean where ships sail: the moon-faced girls in bright jewels went to him, bowed, and received the drum. Kodai, daughter of Bhattarpiran of lovely Puduvai, who wears a cool garland of fresh lotuses, told how it happened in this garland of thirty Sangam Tamil verses. Whoever recites all thirty here without fail will receive grace everywhere from Tirumal, rich in glory, red-eyed, beautiful of face, with four great shoulders like mountains, and will live in joy, our Pavai.

About this bhajan

The last verse steps out of the cowherd village and names the singer. Kodai is Andal’s own name; Bhattarpiran is her father Periyalvar, the priest of the Vatapatrashayi temple at Srivilliputtur, which she calls Puduvai. She sets the gopis’ vow in the frame of the churning of the ocean, when Lakshmi rose and chose Vishnu, and ends with a promise to anyone who recites the thirty verses. On the last day of Margazhi the whole Tiruppavai is sung through, ending with this verse.
