Meaning

In the small, small hours we came and bowed to you. Hear why we praise your golden lotus feet. You were born in our clan, who live by grazing cattle; you cannot leave without taking our intimate service. We did not come today only to take the drum, Govinda. For all time, for seven times seven births, we shall belong to you alone, and serve you alone. Take away every other desire of ours, our Pavai.

About this bhajan

For twenty-eight verses the girls have spoken of the parai, the drum of the vow. Here Andal drops the pretext. They did not come for a drum; they came to serve him in every birth, and they ask him to change any other wish they still carry. Sri Vaishnavas hold this verse as the heart of the Tiruppavai, the plain statement of kainkarya, service done for Bhagwan’s joy alone.
