Meaning
Beautiful is that form to meditate on, standing upon the brick with hands resting on the hips.
Garlands of tulsi round his neck, yellow silk at his waist: that form alone I love, always.
Fish-shaped earrings glitter at his ears, and the Kaustubha jewel shines at his throat.
Tuka says: this is all my happiness, that I gaze with love on his holy face.
About this bhajan
Abhang 2 of the Tukaram Gatha and the abhang every Varkari knows first. It is a dhyana of Vitthal exactly as he stands at Pandharpur: on the brick that Pundalik threw for him, hands on his hips, as he has stood waiting for twenty-eight yugas in the Varkari telling. The dhruvapada, “avade nirantar te chi rup”, is the refrain that the dindis sing as they walk to Pandharpur for Ashadhi Ekadashi.
