Man lagyo mero yar fakiri mein.
Jo sukh paun Ram bhajan mein,
so sukh nahin amiri mein.
Bhala bura sab ka sun lijai,
kar gujran garibi mein.
Akhir yah tan chhar milega,
kahan phirat magruri mein.
Prem nagar mein rahni hamari,
Sahib mile saburi mein.
Kahat Kabir suno bhai sadho,
Sahib mile saburi mein.
Meaning
My heart, friend, has taken to the life of a fakir.
The joy I find in singing of Rama is not to be found in riches.
Hear everyone out, good and bad, and get by in poverty.
In the end this body will turn to ashes; why wander about in pride?
I live in the city of love; the Master is found through patience.
Kabir says, listen, seekers: the Master is found through patience.
About this bhajan
The words fakiri, magruri and saburi show the mixed speech of fifteenth-century Kashi, where Kabir’s songs moved among sadhus and common people alike. The bhajan praises a poor man’s freedom: listen to everyone, want little, remember the body’s end, and wait with patience for the Lord. It is widely sung in Malwa’s Kabir mandalis and in satsangs across north India; the text on Kavita Kosh repeats the last line as the closing refrain.
