Meaning
Victory, victory to the Lord of the devas, giver of joy to his people, protector of those who bow to him. Victory to the friend of cows and Brahmanas, enemy of the asuras, beloved husband of the Ocean’s daughter Lakshmi. Protector of the devas and the earth, your deeds are wonderful and no one knows their secret. May he who is kind by nature and merciful to the humble show us his grace.
Victory, victory to the imperishable one who lives in every heart, all-pervading, supreme bliss; unknowable, beyond the senses, pure in his deeds, untouched by maya, Mukunda. Hosts of munis, free of attachment yet full of love, free of delusion, meditate on him day and night and sing his virtues: victory to Sachchidananda.
He who brought forth creation, made it threefold, with no companion or helper: may that destroyer of sin think of us. We know neither devotion nor worship. He breaks the fear of worldly life, delights the minds of sages and crushes the host of troubles. In mind, word and deed, giving up cleverness, all the devas take refuge in him.
Sarasvati, the Vedas, Shesha and all the rishis, none of them knows him fully; the Vedas proclaim that the humble are dear to him. May that Shri Bhagwan melt with pity. He is the Mandara mountain that churns the ocean of worldly life, lovely in every way, temple of virtues, mass of joy. The munis, siddhas and all the devas, in great fear, bow at the Lord’s lotus feet.
About this bhajan
This is the prayer of the devas, led by Brahma, when the earth, in the form of a cow, could no longer bear Ravana’s cruelty. Tulsidas sets it in the Bal Kanda just before the heavenly voice promises: do not fear, I will take birth in the line of the Sun. So the hymn is the cry that brings Rama into the world, and many families recite it on Ram Navami morning before “Bhaye pragat kripala” at noon. It is also read in hard times, as an appeal for protection.
Ramcharitmanas, Bal Kanda, chhand after doha 185 (Gita Press numbering; often cited as 186); checked against Kavita Kosh
