Gaiye Ganapati jagabandan,
Sankar suvan Bhavani nandan.
Siddhi sadan gaj badan Binayak,
kripa sindhu sundar sab layak.
Modak priya mud mangal data,
bidya baridhi buddhi bidhata.
Mangat Tulsidas kar jore,
basahin Ram Siya manas more.
Meaning
Sing of Ganapati, whom the whole world worships, son of Shankara and of Bhavani.
Home of success, elephant-faced Vinayaka, ocean of grace, lovely and able in everything.
He loves modakas and gives joy and all that is auspicious; he is an ocean of learning and the giver of understanding.
With folded hands Tulsidas asks one thing: may Rama and Sita live in my heart.
About this bhajan
The Vinaya Patrika opens here, with Shri Ganesh, as every Hindu undertaking does. Four short couplets, easy to memorise, and a request at the end that turns the prayer towards Rama: Tulsidas asks Ganesha not for wealth or wisdom but for Rama and Sita to settle in his heart. Families sing it before a Ramayana path or a Satyanarayan katha, and children often learn it as their first Tulsidas.
