Meaning

O mind, worship the kind Shri Ramachandra, who removes the dreadful fear of worldly existence. His eyes are like fresh lotuses; his face, hands and feet are lotuses too, red as the lotus.

His beauty surpasses countless Kamadevas; he is lovely as a fresh dark rain-cloud. His yellow garment shines like lightning. I bow to the pure one, husband of Janaka’s daughter.

Worship him, friend of the humble, the sun of his line, who uproots the clans of danavas and daityas: the joy of Raghu’s family, the root of bliss, the moon of Koshala, the son of Dasharatha.

A crown on his head, earrings and a lovely tilak, ornaments on every graceful limb; arms reaching to his knees, bearing bow and arrows, he who won the battle against Khara and Dushana.

So says Tulsidas: he delights the minds of Shankara, Shesha and the munis. Make your home in the lotus of my heart, you who destroy the band of wicked foes led by desire.

About this bhajan

This is pada 45 of the Vinaya Patrika, Tulsidas’s book of petitions to Shri Rama. Its long compound lines, almost Sanskrit, end on the same ringing “-am” sound, and that is why it suits a temple courtyard so well: the whole congregation can land on the rhyme together. It is sung after the Ramayana path, at evening aarti and through the night of Ram Navami. Many singers add two passages from the Ramcharitmanas (Sita’s prayer to Gauri) after the fifth stanza; those lines are not part of this pada.
