About this bhajan
The whole song turns on one wonder. The Katha Upanishad calls the Self ‘smaller than the atom, greater than the great’, and Purandara Dasa puts those very words, aṇor aṇīyān mahato mahīyān, into a lullaby: this is the child Yashoda is bouncing on her knee. She thinks he is her son. The Vedas cannot hold him, yet her arms do. Sung in Kapi to Adi tala, it is one of the most loved Dasa songs in concert, and M. S. Subbulakshmi’s recording carried it far beyond Karnataka. At Janmashtami it is sung beside the cradle.
