Meaning

Pallavi: Make me your servant, my Lord, Venkataramana of the thousand names.

1. Free me from every evil thought; put the armour of your compassion on my life. Grant me the service of your feet; place the flower of your fear-removing hand upon my head.

2. Begging firm devotion of you, I bow at your feet, Lord, singing every day. Why only glance at me from the corner of your eye and pass on? Give me meditation on you, and make my mind pure.

3. Your title is that you guard those who take refuge in you; do not forget me, protect me and keep me. Cut away all my sins, and keep me, Shri Purandara Vitthala.

About this bhajan

Purandara Dasa was a rich moneylender before he gave everything away and took to the road with a tambura. This song is the prayer of that new life. He does not ask for wealth, he has had wealth; he asks to be made a dasa, a servant, of Venkataramana of the Seven Hills. The three charanas climb from cleansing, to devotion, to refuge, and the last calls on the Lord’s own biruda, his pledged title, as the protector of all who come to him. M. S. Subbulakshmi’s recording made it known far beyond Karnataka.
