Meaning
Pallavi: Come, Lakshmi of good fortune, our mother, come; Lakshmi of every blessing, come.
1. Setting one step after another, letting the bells on your anklets ring, come at the hour when good and holy people do their puja, as butter rises out of buttermilk.
2. Come calling down a rain of gold, show us the fulfilment of the heart’s wishes; daughter of King Janaka, shining with the light of a crore suns, come quickly.
3. Without straying here and there, stay in the homes of devotees, where every day is a festival and every day auspicious; you are the little golden image that shines in the hearts of sadhus who show the truth.
4. Giving fortune beyond counting, come turning the bangles on your wrist; you who wear the kumkum mark, lotus-eyed one, proud queen of Venkataramana.
5. Making channels of sugar and ghee flow, at the hour of the Friday puja; queen of the loving Ranga of Alagiri, of the fair Purandara Vitthala.
About this bhajan
In Karnataka this is the song for the Friday lamp. Women sing it at Varamahalakshmi in Shravana, at Deepavali, and when a new bride or a new house is welcomed, calling Mahalakshmi in with the sound of her anklets. Purandara Dasa gives her no distant throne. She walks in step by step, like butter rising in a churned pot, and stays in the house where the puja is done with love. The last verse names her twice over as Vishnu’s queen, of Venkataramana on the hill and of Purandara Vitthala, the Dasa’s own mudra. Concert singers take it in Madhyamavati; some versions use Shri raga.
