Shri Devikoop Bhadrakali Temple, Kurukshetra

The Kurukshetra Shakti Peetha of the Pithanirnaya list, where the right ankle of Sati is said to have fallen into a well. Before the war the Pandavas came here to pray for victory, and devotees still offer small horses of clay and metal.

01The well of the Devi

In the Pithanirnaya list, Kurukshetra is a Shakti Peetha where the Devi is Savitri and Bhairava is Sthanu, and the temple at Devikoop in Thanesar holds the seat. The ankle of the Devi is set in white marble above the old well. Thanesar was Sthanvishvara, the capital of Harshavardhana, and the shrine of Sthaneshwar Mahadev is close by. Navratri and the solar eclipse fairs of Kurukshetra bring great crowds to the temple.

02Horses for the Devi

The temple’s tradition says that Shri Krishna brought the Pandavas here before the battle of Kurukshetra, and that they vowed their horses to the Devi if they won, and gave them after the war. So the offering here is a horse: small ones of terracotta, silver or gold, left in heaps around the shrine when a wish is fulfilled. The same tradition says the mundan, the first tonsure, of Krishna and Balarama was done here, and families still bring children for that rite.
