A pure hymn for Indra and Varuna
Maharshi Vasishtha purifies his thought, free of rakshasas, offering soma to Indra and Varuna; let them guard us in the rush of battle. Here at the calling of the Devas men contend, where arrows fall on the banners; strike those enemies away and scatter them with your missile. The self-glorious waters set Indra and Varuna as their Devas: one holds the separated peoples together, the other slays foes who cannot be withstood. The worshipper who turns to them with offerings shall prosper.
स्पर्ध॑न्ते॒ वा उ॑ देव॒हूये॒ अत्र॒ येषु॑ ध्व॒जेषु॑ दि॒द्यव॒ः पत॑न्ति ।
यु॒वं ताँ इ॑न्द्रावरुणाव॒मित्रा॑न्ह॒तं परा॑च॒ः शर्वा॒ विषू॑चः
spardhante vā u devahūye atra yeṣu dhvajeṣu didyavaḥ patanti |
yuvaṃ tām̐ indrāvaruṇāvamitrānhataṃ parācaḥ śarvā viṣūcaḥ
आप॑श्चि॒द्धि स्वय॑शस॒ः सद॑स्सु दे॒वीरिन्द्रं॒ वरु॑णं दे॒वता॒ धुः ।
कृ॒ष्टीर॒न्यो धा॒रय॑ति॒ प्रवि॑क्ता वृ॒त्राण्य॒न्यो अ॑प्र॒तीनि॑ हन्ति
āpaściddhi svayaśasaḥ sadassu devīrindraṃ varuṇaṃ devatā dhuḥ |
kṛṣṭīranyo dhārayati praviktā vṛtrāṇyanyo apratīni hanti
स सु॒क्रतु॑रृत॒चिद॑स्तु॒ होता॒ य आ॑दित्य॒ शव॑सा वां॒ नम॑स्वान् ।
आ॒व॒वर्त॒दव॑से वां ह॒विष्मा॒नस॒दित्स सु॑वि॒ताय॒ प्रय॑स्वान्
sa sukraturṛtacidastu hotā ya āditya śavasā vāṃ namasvān |
āvavartadavase vāṃ haviṣmānasaditsa suvitāya prayasvān
इ॒यमिन्द्रं॒ वरु॑णमष्ट मे॒ गीः प्राव॑त्तो॒के तन॑ये॒ तूतु॑जाना ।
सु॒रत्ना॑सो दे॒ववी॑तिं गमेम यू॒यं पा॑त स्व॒स्तिभि॒ः सदा॑ नः
iyamindraṃ varuṇamaṣṭa me gīḥ prāvattoke tanaye tūtujānā |
suratnāso devavītiṃ gamema yūyaṃ pāta svastibhiḥ sadā naḥ
