What happens in this chapter

Born, Agni drove out the darkness

Sutambhara of the Atri family urges the worshipper, in gayatri, to wake the immortal Agni with praise while kindling him, so he may set the offerings among the devas. Mortals honour him in the yajna as the best sacrificer among men, and pour ghee from the dripping ladle so he may carry the oblation. One mantra holds a whole deed: born, Agni shone out, slaying the Dasyus and darkness with his light, and found the cows, the waters and the sun. The rishi asks all to serve this ghee-backed seer and to make him grow with thoughtful words.
