Sutambhara of the Atri family sings a short gayatri hymn to Agni, opening with singers who call and kindle him while chanting. They seek wealth through a praise that reaches the sky. Agni, the hotar among men, is asked to accept these words and to worship the divine folk. He is wide-spreading, beloved, worthy of choice; through him the yajna is stretched out. The wise make him grow, the best winner of prizes, and ask him for heroic strength. The closing image is memorable: as the rim of a wheel holds its spokes, so Agni surrounds the devas.
