What happens in this chapter

Agni, the dear and welcome hotar

Put on your garments, lord of strength, worthy of the yajna, and offer this rite for us. Shunahshepa addresses Agni in gayatri as the chosen hotar, youngest of the gods. As a father for his son, a kinsman for a kinsman, a friend for a friend, Agni offers worship. Let Varuna, Mitra and Aryaman sit on our grass as they sat for Manu. Let the lord of the people be dear to us, and may we, with good fires, be dear to him. The last verse asks the son of strength, with all the fires, to accept this yajna and this word.
