Shiva's wandering grief and the Blue Mountain
Bhagwan Shiva tells Uma how he himself first heard the katha. In her earlier birth she came to Daksha's house as Sati. Insulted at Daksha's sacrifice, she gave up her life in great anger, and Shiva's attendants destroyed the yajna; she knows that whole account. Shiva was stricken by the parting and wandered in detachment through lovely forests, hills, rivers and lakes. Far to the north, beyond Sumeru, stands a beautiful blue mountain with four golden peaks. On each grows one great tree: banyan, peepal, pakar and mango. Above them lies a fair lake with jewelled steps, its water cool, clear and sweet, full of many-coloured lotuses, swans calling softly and bees humming.
