Sandalwood and the axe

Bharata ventures a liberty: ocean of mercy, I am your servant. The Vedas and Puranas sing the greatness of saints, and you yourself have praised them, for you love them greatly. I want to hear their marks, and to know clearly how a saint differs from one who is not. Rama answers: brother, the marks of saints are countless and well known in the Shruti and Puranas. Saints and the wicked behave like sandalwood and the axe. The axe cuts the sandal tree, yet the sandal leaves its fragrance on the axe. So sandal rises to rest on the heads of the devas, while the axe-head is burned in fire and beaten with the hammer.
