Ravana routs the monkeys; Lakshmana goes out
Ravana charges in fury and the monkeys rush to meet him, shouting. Together they hurl hills, trees and boulders at him, but on his thunderbolt body the rocks shatter into pieces. Raging, he springs this way and that, crushing monkey warriors. Bears and monkeys flee, Angada, Hanuman and Tara among them, crying: save us, Raghubira, this wretch devours us like Death. Then he fits arrows to all ten bows and looses them; they fly like serpents and fill earth, sky and every quarter, leaving the monkeys nowhere to run. Seeing his army in distress, Lakshmana ties on his quiver, takes his bow, bows his head at Rama's feet and goes out in anger.
लागहिँ सैल बज्र तन तासू । खंड खंड होइ फूटहिं आसू ॥
चला न अचल रहा रथ रोपी । रन दुर्मद रावन अति कोपी ॥
lāgahim̐ saila bajra tana tāsū | khaṃḍa khaṃḍa hoi phūṭahiṃ āsū ||
calā na acala rahā ratha ropī | rana durmada rāvana ati kopī ||
इत उत झपटि दपटि कपि जोधा । मर्दै लाग भयउ अति क्रोधा ॥

तेहि देखे कपि सकल पराने । दसहुँ चाप सायक सन्धाने ॥

tehi dekhe kapi sakala parāne | dasahum̐ cāpa sāyaka sandhāne ||
सन्धानि धनु सर निकर छाडेसि, उरग जिमि उडि लागहीं ।
रहे पूरि सर धरनी-गगन-दिसि,-बिदसि कहँ कपि भागहीं ॥
भयो अति-कोलाहल बिकल कपि, दल भालु बोलहिँ आतुरे ।
रघुबीर करुना सिन्धु आरत, बन्धु जन-रच्छक हरे ॥
sandhāni dhanu sara nikara chāḍesi, uraga jimi uḍi lāgahīṃ |
rahe pūri sara dharanī-gagana-disi,-bidasi kaham̐ kapi bhāgahīṃ ||
bhayo ati-kolāhala bikala kapi, dala bhālu bolahim̐ āture |
raghubīra karunā sindhu ārata, bandhu jana-racchaka hare ||
