Kumbhakarna devours the army; Rama steps forward
Kumbhakarna advances like wrathful Death. He grabs crores of monkeys and eats them; they vanish into him like locusts into a mountain cave. Others he crushes against his body or grinds into the dust. Bears and monkeys pour out through his mouth, nose and ears and run for their lives. Mad with the intoxication of battle, he looks as if he would swallow the whole world. The routed warriors will not turn back; they neither see nor hear when called. Hearing that Kumbhakarna has broken the monkey host, the rakshasa army charges too. Shri Rama sees his forces in distress and the enemy coming on in many forms. The lotus-eyed Lord speaks: Sugriva, Vibhishana, Lakshmana, look after the army. I will deal with this host of the wicked myself.
कोटिन्ह गहि सरीर सन मर्दा । कोटिन्ह मीजि मिलब महि गर्दा ॥
मुख नासा श्रवनन्हि कीं बाटा । निसरि पराहिँ भालु कपि ठाटा ॥

कुम्भकरन कपि फौज बिडारी । सुनि धाई रजनीचर-धारी ॥
देखी राम बिकल कटकाई । रिपु अनीक नाना विधि आई ॥

dekhī rāma bikala kaṭakāī | ripu anīka nānā vidhi āī ||
सुनु सुग्रीव बिभीषन, अनुज सँभारेहु सैन ।

sunu sugrīva bibhīṣana, anuja sam̐bhārehu saina |
maiṃ dekhaum̐ khala-jala-dalahi, bole rājiva naina ||
