Lakshmana goes out, fierce battle rages

Lakshmana goes out with blood-red eyes, broad chest and mighty arms, his body like the Himalaya with a tinge of red. Here Ravana sends his warriors, who run with weapons of every kind. The monkeys, armed with mountains, nails and trees, rush in crying victory to Rama. Pair grapples with pair, and the will to win is great on both sides. The monkeys strike with fists and kicks and bite. Kill, kill, seize, seize; break off his head, tear out his arms: this cry fills all nine regions of the earth. Fearful headless trunks run about everywhere. The gods watch from the sky, now in wonder, now in joy. Blood pools and clots in the hollows with dust flying over it, like smoke spread over heaps of embers.
