The king counsels his daughter in many ways, teaching her a wife's dharma and the customs of the family. He gives many maids and servants, the faithful ones Sita loves. As Sita leaves, the people of the city are distraught, yet every omen is auspicious. Janaka himself, with Brahmanas, ministers and his court, goes along to see them off. At the right moment the music sounds and the party readies its chariots, elephants and horses. Dasharatha calls all the Brahmanas and fills them with gifts and honour. Placing the dust of their feet on his head, he receives their blessings gladly. Remembering Ganesha, he sets out amid many good omens. Devas rain flowers, apsaras sing, and the lord of Avadh heads for his city to the beat of drums.
