Elephants, palanquins and the longing to see Rama
Howdahs are laid on the great elephants, decorated beyond describing. The rutting elephants move off with bells ringing, like a fine row of monsoon clouds. There are many other carriages, lovely palanquins and litters, and in them ride groups of the best Brahmins, as if all the Vedic metres had taken bodily form. Bards, minstrels and singers of praise go in carriages that suit each. Mules, camels and oxen of many breeds carry goods of countless kinds, and porters by the crore carry loads on shoulder poles; who can list the things they bear? All the servants follow, each with his own gear. Every heart is full of joy and every body thrills, longing for the moment to see Rama and Lakshmana, the two heroes, to their eyes' content.
