What happens in this chapter

Jewelled bamboo, birds and garlands

The craftsmen make bamboo poles of green gems, so straight and leafy they cannot be told from real ones. Betel creepers are fashioned in gold, their leaves so lifelike they are hard to tell apart. Bands are worked from them with strings of pearls between, and lotuses are carved from rubies, emeralds, diamonds and turquoise. Bees and birds are made that seem to hum and call when the wind passes. Images of Devas are carved on the pillars, standing with auspicious offerings in their hands. Squares are filled with many patterns of elephant pearls. Mango leaves are cut from sapphire, with blossoms of gold and clusters of emerald, hung on silken cords.
