The raised axe and Vishvamitra's plea

Lakshmana goes on: you keep calling death to come for me. At these hard words Parashurama grips his terrible axe. Let no one blame me now, he says; a sharp-tongued boy deserves death. I spared him for his youth, but now he is surely doomed. Vishvamitra pleads: forgive him; saints do not weigh a child's faults. Parashurama answers that he holds an axe, is merciless and wrathful, and faces an offender against his guru; only for Kaushika's sake does he let him live, or this axe would have cleared his debt to his guru with little effort. Vishvamitra laughs within: the muni sees only green, and still cannot tell that these boys are steel, not sugarcane.
