Parashurama's wrath at the broken bow
Janaka tells him why the kings have come. Parashurama looks round and sees the pieces of the bow on the ground. In fierce anger he says: tell me, foolish Janaka, who broke the bow? Show him at once, or today I will overturn the earth as far as your kingdom reaches. In great fear the king gives no answer, while the crooked kings rejoice. Devas, munis, nagas and townsfolk are full of dread. Sita's mother laments that fate has spoiled everything, and for Sita half a moment passes like an age. Seeing everyone frightened and knowing Janaki's fear, Shri Raghuvira speaks, with neither joy nor sorrow in his heart.
अति रिस बोले बचन कठोरा । कहु जड़ जनक धनुष कै तोरा ॥
बेगि देखाउ मूढ़ न त आजू । उलटउँ महि जहँ लगि तव राजू ॥
ati risa bole bacana kaṭhorā | kahu jar̤a janaka dhanuṣa kai torā ||
begi dekhāu mūr̤ha na ta ājū | ulaṭaum̐ mahi jaham̐ lagi tava rājū ||
अति डर उतर देत नृप नाहीं । कुटिल भूप हरषे मन माहीं ॥
सुर मुनि नाग नगर नर-नारी । सोचहिँ सकल त्रास उर भारी ॥
ati ḍara utara deta nṛpa nāhīṃ | kuṭila bhūpa haraṣe mana māhīṃ ||
sura muni nāga nagara nara-nārī | socahim̐ sakala trāsa ura bhārī ||
मन पछिताति सीय-महँतारी । बिधि अब सबरी बात बिगारी ॥
भृगुपति कर सुभाउ सुनि सीता । अरध-निमेष कलप सम बीता ॥
mana pachitāti sīya-maham̐tārī | bidhi aba sabarī bāta bigārī ||
bhṛgupati kara subhāu suni sītā | aradha-nimeṣa kalapa sama bītā ||
सभय बिलोके लोग सब, जानि जानकी भीर ।
हृदयँ न हरष बिषाद कछु, बोले श्रीरघुबीर ॥
sabhaya biloke loga saba, jāni jānakī bhīra |
hṛdayam̐ na haraṣa biṣāda kachu, bole śrīraghubīra ||
