काम-रूप जानहिँ सब माया । सपनेहुँ जिन्ह कें धरम न दाया ॥
दसमुख बैठ सभाँ एक बारा । देखि अमित आपन परिवारा ॥
kāma-rūpa jānahim̐ saba māyā | sapanehum̐ jinha keṃ dharama na dāyā ||
dasamukha baiṭha sabhām̐ eka bārā | dekhi amita āpana parivārā ||

The rakshasas can take any form and know every kind of illusion; not even in a dream do they hold to dharma or feel pity. One day ten-headed Ravana sits in his court and looks over his countless kin: sons, grandsons, retainers, a whole race of night-walkers past counting. Seeing that army, his pride swells and he speaks in anger. The devas are our enemies, he says, yet they never stand and fight; they run when they see a strong foe. There is one way to kill them. Go and disrupt every feeding of Brahmanas, every yajna, homa and shraddha. Starved of their share and weakened, the devas will come to me of their own accord, and then I will kill them or keep them as my subjects.
